AI Policy

Didascein (Journal of English Education) recognizes that generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Copilot, are increasingly used in research and writing. This policy, aligned with the guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), sets out their acceptable use and applies to all manuscripts submitted for Volume 8 Number 1 (March 2027) onwards.

For Authors

  • AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors, because they cannot take responsibility for the work.
  • Authors may use AI tools to improve language, grammar, or readability, provided they review and edit the output carefully. Such basic language editing does not need to be disclosed.
  • Authors may also use AI tools to support the research process (e.g., summarizing literature, organizing ideas, assisting with data analysis, or creating figures), provided this use is disclosed in an AI Use Statement placed before the References. The statement must name the tool, its version, and its purpose.
  • Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the content, including all references. AI-generated citations must be checked against the original sources.
  • AI must not be used to fabricate or manipulate data, images, or references. Such use is treated as research misconduct.

Example of an AI Use Statement:
"During the preparation of this work, the authors used ChatGPT (GPT-4o) to summarize prior studies for the literature review. The authors reviewed and edited the content and take full responsibility for the publication."

For Reviewers

  • Reviewers must not upload manuscripts, or any part of them, to AI tools, as this breaches confidentiality.
  • Reviewers may use AI only to polish the language of their own review comments, and remain responsible for the content of their reports.

For Editors

  • Editors must not upload manuscripts to AI tools and must not rely on AI to make editorial decisions.
  • Editors may ask authors to clarify how AI was used when a manuscript raises concerns, and handle undisclosed use under this policy.

Undisclosed or inappropriate use of AI is handled under the journal's Allegations of Research Misconduct and Correction and Retraction policies.
